REALTIME RICA

What is RICA?

RICA is a law passed by the South African government and stands for the Regulation of Interception of Communications and provision of communication‑related information Act. This law that requires ALL cellphone users to register their identity and proof of residence against their SIM cards.

 

This law is there to help law enforcement agencies if they need track criminals using cellphones for illegal activities or to identify cellphone users.

 

OmniTel is required by law to RICA every OmniTel SIM Card with the necessary RICA documents before we can enable your SIM card for service.

Each SIM card needs its own RICA documentation, if you activate more OmniTel SIM cards in the future, you will need to go through the RICA process again.

What do you need for RICA?

To do the OmniTel RICA process you need the following:

  1. Access to a smartphone with a camera (on any network)

  2. Valid Proof of Residence

  3. Valid Identity Document

 

What can be used as a Valid Proof of Residence?

  • Municipal Bill or Bank Statement (not older than 3 months)

  • Cellphone Account or Retail Account (not older than 3 months)

  • Any document that you receive monthly, that is not older than 3 months that, that has your residential address and name

 

What can be used as a Valid Identity Document?

  • South African Green Bar‑Coded ID Book

  • South African Smart ID Card

  • South Africa Passport

  • Foreign Passport, which should ideally contain a valid Visa and/or an arrival/departure stamp

Note: A driver’s license CAN NOT be used as a valid form of identification for RICA

 

Do I need to go anywhere to do my RICA?

Not at all! You can RICA your OmniTel SIM from wherever you are right now.
